Lessons from a daffodil

March 1st is St David’s Day – the patron Saint of Wales.

Legend has it that a hill rose up whilst St David was preaching, so everyone could see him, suddenly bursting into colour when daffodils bloomed.

The flower is worn to commemorate the day, a delightful flower it is too. It brings colour and cheers up many with the vibrant colour after winter has encouraged nature to take a rest, to tone down the colours. Nature is now waking up for the seasons ahead!

I noticed this clump of daffodils, reminding me of my roots; causing me to smile, stop, stare, enjoy the spectacle.

It also reminded me that the yellow colour gains the attention, the green ignored; yet it is the green that provides the contrast, the backcloth to make the yellow stand out.

Perhaps a time to reflect on who we have noticed and praised for their vibrancy of ‘colour’.

Perhaps more importantly who have we ignored, even though they have played a crucial role in their leadership, support, actions, that made the ‘colourful’ standout.

The ‘quiet leaders’ all too often go unnoticed, un-thanked, unrecognised…yet often their approach to leadership delivers the best results. Long after the vibrance of colour has died away, the green remains.

Who do you recognise and thank? Both?

Food for thought – I hope!

My best wishes,

Peter
